D.C. Council member Robert White Jr. won the Democratic primary Tuesday for the district’s nonvoting delegate to Congress. The victory positions him to succeed the longtime incumbent in November’s general election in the heavily Democratic city.
White’s win marks the first time in a generation that D.C. residents voted for a new mayor and delegate in the same election. Ranked choice voting was used for the first time in the primary, a change election officials warned could delay final results.
The delegate position allows the district’s nearly 700,000 residents, who lack voting representation in Congress, to introduce bills and speak on the House floor.
White campaigned on protecting the city’s autonomy amid federal intervention and budget oversight.
