Dallas Stars, Jason Robertson remain in contract talks as trade interest grows

The Dallas Stars and restricted free agent winger Jason Robertson have not agreed on a new contract as the NHL draft approaches on Friday. Robertson tied for fourth in the league with 45 goals last season. His agent, Andy Scott, has sought an average annual salary above $14 million on a long-term deal.

Trade interest and compensation The Stars offered Robertson an eight-year contract worth $12 million per year, the same structure given to Mikko Rantanen after his acquisition from the Carolina Hurricanes. Multiple teams have contacted Dallas about Robertson's availability.

One NHL executive told ESPN that the Stars are seeking a package comparable to the assets sent for Rantanen: two conditional first-round picks, two third-round picks, and forward Logan Stankoven. An offer sheet above $11.9 million in average annual value would require the signing team to surrender four first-round picks to Dallas over five drafts beginning in 2027.

Other league developments The Washington Capitals acquired Jordan Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues and Alex Tuch from the Buffalo Sabres in separate deals this week. Tuch's agreement is for eight years at $10.5 million per year. The Capitals added nearly $19 million in salary for next season while awaiting a decision from captain Alex Ovechkin on whether he will return for a 22nd season.

The Buffalo Sabres continue talks with Tuch, who remains an unrestricted free agent. The Seattle Kraken and other teams have expressed interest in signing him. The Winnipeg Jets have received calls about goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. The Detroit Red Wings expect to trade captain Dylan Larkin before next season.
