Databricks Cofounder’s SkyPilot Orchestration Tool Raises $20 Million in Seed Funding

Ion Stoica, cofounder of Databricks, and Zongheng Yang publicly launched SkyPilot on July 21. Stoica said expanding Databricks from one cloud to two required a full year of engineering effort. SkyPilot addresses similar challenges as labs now connect to multiple cloud providers to secure GPUs.

Yang, who interned at Databricks when the company had roughly ten people, stated that customers spending $100 million per year on GPUs can achieve more than 10 percent utilization improvement, equaling $10 million in annual savings. Nvidia acquired Run:ai for roughly $700 million in 2024 and later open-sourced the software.

The AI orchestration market is projected to grow from around $14 billion in 2026 to more than $60 billion by 2034. SkyPilot integrates with CoreWeave and Nebius. SkyPilot's code has been available on GitHub for years. Stoica's lab previously produced Databricks and Anyscale.
