Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, said June 30 that he would love to run against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The comments came during an interview on Fox News' Jesse Watters Primetime. Portnoy said he might enter the race because he feels he could make a change.
He described mixed feelings, noting that on some days in Nantucket he questions why he would ruin his life by getting involved in politics. At other times, he said, he feels it is his duty. "I've had a real job, I've done real things, unlike these clown politicians who have never had a job," Portnoy said.
Mamdani, 34, was elected mayor in November as New York's first Muslim and first South Asian mayor. The next mayoral election is scheduled for 2029. Portnoy has criticized Mamdani on X, including a June 26 post accusing the mayor of turning New York into a socialist city by supporting democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier, who defeated Representative Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary for New York's 13th Congressional District.
Earlier posts called Mamdani a professional actor. Mamdani's office did not respond to a request for comment.
