Sir David Attenborough turns 100 on Friday, marking a century that includes more than seven decades presenting some of the world's most watched natural history programmes. Colleagues who have worked alongside him for decades describe a unique combination of intellectual and physical energy that has remained constant from his 60s into his 90s.

" Gunton recalled accompanying Attenborough on a filming trip to Finland at age 96 when temperatures reached -3C. Despite suggestions to take it easy, Attenborough joined the crew in handling equipment and sound recorders, demonstrating the same hands-on approach he showed as a younger man.

"If you get to work with him, you know you're going to be working on a winner," Gunton said. He added that Attenborough remains curious, part of the team and unchanged in his passion for the natural world.

A Perfectionist Storyteller Elizabeth White, who collaborated with Attenborough on Blue Planet II, worked closely with him on scripting and narration. She described him as a phenomenal writer whose delivery transforms the text. "When he reads that script out for the final commentary record, it takes on its own unique Attenborough specialness," White said.

"There's nobody quite like him. " White also noted Attenborough's modesty. Despite the global impact of his programmes, he consistently credits the production team. During the first Blue Planet series, when White was a PhD student on work experience, Attenborough approached her to ask about her studies despite her junior status.

"That really stuck with me. You know, he didn't need to ask, but he did," she added.

Attenborough released an audio message on Thursday expressing gratitude for the volume of greetings he received. >"I had rather thought that I would celebrate my 100th birthday quietly, but it seems that many of you have had other ideas. " — Sir David Attenborough, May 7 2026 (BBC News) A special 90-minute concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London will air on BBC One and iPlayer on Friday evening, hosted by Kirsty Young.

Guests including Sir Michael Palin, Steve Backshall, Liz Bonnin and Chris Packham will reflect on his career. The BBC Concert Orchestra will perform music tied to his series, such as pieces from Planet Earth II and Frozen Planet II. The event forms the climax of a week of special programming that included a documentary on the making of his 1979 series Life on Earth and the recent Secret Garden programme examining British garden wildlife.

The Natural History Museum named a species of parasitic wasp after him on Thursday. The Attenboroughnculus tau, native to lakes in Chile, joins a list of organisms previously named in his honour that includes a wildflower, butterfly, grasshopper, dinosaur and ghost shrimp.

Attenborough has used his platform to highlight environmental issues, including plastic pollution in the oceans. His warnings prompted widespread public response, including the viral social media campaign Do It for David. Gunton, who has known Attenborough since the broadcaster was in his 60s and he was in his 20s, said the veteran presenter matches public expectations in private.

"He is the perfect gentleman, the perfect companion. He's funny, he's kind, entertaining. He is just like you would hope he would be," Gunton added. Colleagues say his curiosity, kindness and commitment to the natural world remain undimmed as he enters his second century.
