David Hockney Funeral Held Privately Before June 20

The funeral for British painter David Hockney took place before June 20 and was limited to his partner JP and his great-nephew Richard, according to his publicist Erica Bolton. Bolton issued the statement on Saturday, June 20, in response to public inquiries about arrangements. Hockney died on June 12 at the age of 88.

Le Monde reported that he helped pioneer the 1960s pop art movement and produced paintings noted for their use of brilliant color. Bolton said the private service followed Hockney's explicit wishes. She added that the privacy of those present would be respected.

Hockney is survived by his long-time partner Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima, two brothers, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, Bolton previously confirmed. The vast majority of Hockney's works will be given to foundations and public institutions, Bolton stated. In 2008 he founded The David Hockney Foundation, which owns more than 8,000 works.

Bolton said the first memorial service will be held in London in the first half of 2027. Additional services are planned for Yorkshire, Paris and Los Angeles at later dates.
