Dawn Staley Addresses Confrontation with Geno Auriemma Before South Carolina-UCLA Women's Final
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley dismissed a postgame confrontation with UConn's Geno Auriemma as a distraction ahead of the NCAA women's basketball championship against UCLA. Auriemma apologized in a statement for his reaction following South Carolina's Final Four win. The incident stemmed from a perceived lack of a post-introduction handshake, per NCAA tournament protocol.
Fox NewsSouth Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball coach Dawn Staley addressed a confrontation with UConn Huskies coach Geno Auriemma after her team's 79-75 Final Four victory on Friday night in Cleveland. Auriemma approached Staley at halfcourt following the game, appearing upset.
The exchange occurred after South Carolina advanced to the national championship, marking their fourth appearance in the title game in the last 10 years.
Staley, when asked about the incident on Saturday, stated she was focused on the upcoming championship. "For me, no distractions at this time. I'm concentrating on winning a national championship, that’s it," Staley said. She added, "That’s a little disheartening.
This is sports, sometimes things like this happen.
Auriemma issued a statement on Saturday afternoon apologizing for his behavior. "There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina. It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut," the statement read. Auriemma further said, "I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina.
It was uncalled for in how I reacted. The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that.
Staley expressed confusion about Auriemma's anger during her postgame comments. "I have no idea," she said. "But I’m going to let you know this: I’m of integrity. I’m of integrity. So if I did something wrong to Geno, I had no idea what I did. I guess he thought I didn’t shake his hand at the beginning of the game.
I didn’t know. I went down there pregame, shook everybody on his staff’s hand. I don’t know what he came with after the game, but, hey, sometimes things get heated.
The ESPN broadcast noted that Staley shook hands with UConn staff members and players before tip-off. However, NCAA tournament policy requires the opposing coaches to meet at midcourt for a handshake after the starting lineups are announced. Staley and Auriemma had shaken hands earlier in the pregame but not after the introductions, which appeared to upset Auriemma.
South Carolina, the defending national champions, will face the UCLA Bruins in the women's NCAA championship game on Sunday in Cleveland. The Gamecocks seek their third title in seven years, while UCLA aims for its first since 1978. The incident occurs amid heightened attention on women's basketball, with both coaches being prominent figures in the sport's history.
