DC US Attorney Announces Prosecution of Parents in Teen Takeovers
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated Tuesday that her office will prosecute parents and children involved in teen takeovers. She cited a recent brawl at a Chipotle restaurant in Navy Yard as an example of the violence her office intends to address.
New York PostU.S. C. Pirro made the comments during an appearance on Fox & Friends. She pointed to a brawl at a Chipotle restaurant in the Navy Yard that was recorded on video and has circulated widely online. "What we saw at Chipotle is an example of what is going to come, and we’re not going to tolerate it," Pirro said.
She added that parents have a fundamental responsibility to supervise their children and that her office has multiple legal tools available to pursue cases.
The FBI is assisting local authorities in the investigation of the Chipotle incident. Rafael Jauregui, who recorded the video, described the event as an ambush involving individuals dressed in black with ski masks. Jauregui said he had taken his seven children to the restaurant after a Nationals-Orioles game.
He stated that the violence left his family traumatized and that his children have said they do not want to return to that location.
Pirro said her office is focused on parents who are aware of their children’s activities but choose not to intervene. She stated that the office is not targeting single parents who are unable to control their children. "People in DC have a right to be safe; in fact, they should demand it," Pirro said.
She also said people should not have to worry about digital takeovers that can be organized in ten minutes when visiting the nation’s capital.
