Debris from an intercepted Iranian Fateh-110 ballistic missile struck Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, injuring approximately five Americans and destroying at least one MQ-9 Reaper drone while seriously damaging another, according to Bloomberg. The missile was intercepted by Kuwaiti air defenses, but the debris still caused the reported damage at the base.

Washington Examiner reported that the incident occurred while the Trump administration continues pursuing negotiations with Tehran.

The same report noted that the timing is difficult to ignore because the strike took place while negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain active. Washington Examiner stated that this was not an incident that occurred after diplomacy failed. The MQ-9 Reaper drones are described in the report as among the most valuable intelligence, surveillance, and strike assets in the American arsenal.

Washington Examiner reported that the destruction of an MQ-9 Reaper is not insignificant. The report added that the attack demonstrates American personnel remain at risk despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

U.S. Foreign policy, Iraqi governance, and Kurdish political affairs, authored the Washington Examiner piece. U.S. and international publications, according to the same report.
