DeepMind CEO calls for U.S.-led AI standards body

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis called for a U.S.-led standards body to oversee frontier AI models. Hassabis said an intense commercial and geopolitical race is increasing the technology's risks. He wrote that AI could bring a new age for humanity greater than the Industrial Revolution, but only if deployed responsibly.

Proposal details Hassabis proposed that frontier AI labs share new models with the self-regulatory organization 30 days before launch. If major risks are uncovered, the organization could coordinate a slowdown in development. His proposal follows some influential researchers' blueprint for safe AI, called "Plan A," which calls for international coordination to delay the development of superintelligence.
