Defense ministry delays detailed plan for Gwangju military airport relocation
The defense ministry said Monday it has not finalized a relocation plan for the Gwangju military airport after the site was chosen for a semiconductor production cluster. The government selected the airport earlier the same day as part of its three mega projects initiative.

The defense ministry said Monday it has not finalized a detailed relocation plan for the military airport in Gwangju after the airfield was selected as the site for a semiconductor production cluster. Earlier the same day the government chose the airport, located about 270 kilometers south of Seoul, for the planned semiconductor manufacturing cluster under its three mega projects initiative.
A defense ministry official said the ministry will work with the Air Force to maintain military readiness while supporting the government policy.
The airport houses an Air Force base that conducts advanced flight training for pilot trainees. The government has named Muan county as the preliminary candidate site for relocating the airport. County officials have requested a review of the relocation process and said three conditions, including national-level incentives, must be met first.
Under the chip cluster project, Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc. announced plans to invest a combined 800 trillion won, about 522 billion dollars, in the Gwangju and Honam region.
