Delaware Sen. Chris Coons sustained minor injuries Sunday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash in Sussex County after another driver experienced a medical incident. The senator, a passenger in one of the affected vehicles, was taken to Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Delaware, for treatment.
Coons stated he is now home and expects a full and swift recovery. He thanked first responders from the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, and staff at Beebe Hospital. No other injuries were reported as serious.
Coons, 62, has represented Delaware in the Senate since winning a 2010 special election. He announced his bid for a fourth term on June 12 and faces Christopher Beardsley in the Democratic primary on Sept. 15.
