Democrat accuses Republican of spreading infidelity rumor in Michigan governor race

Rep. Hillary Scholten accused Republican gubernatorial candidate Perry Johnson of spreading false claims about her, including an unsubstantiated infidelity rumor, on Tuesday. Scholten said the posts referenced a rumor of a romantic relationship between her and Rep. John James. She called the attacks "sick and false" and told Johnson to stop.

Republican contest The exchange occurred days after former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox suspended his campaign. Cox said he would support James in the general election. The Republican primary is scheduled for Aug. 4. Johnson has previously challenged James on ballot petitions and campaign issues.

Scholten announced her separation from her husband earlier this year, and court records show their divorce proceedings have been contentious. No public evidence has been presented to support the rumor.
