Democratic ex-governor criticizes party over 2024 candidate selection
A former Democratic governor said party leaders should have recognized that the sitting president was not fit to run again and questioned why officials did not act sooner.
nypost.comA Democratic former governor said Sunday that party officials allowed an incumbent president to seek re-election despite clear signs he was not physically or mentally capable of serving another term. The former governor made the remarks during a radio interview and pointed to the president's debate performance as evidence that should have prompted earlier action.
"You didn't have to be a psychiatric or a medical professional to realize he was not up to the job," the former governor said.
Questions about internal review The comments followed release of a draft internal party report that examined the 2024 election outcome. The former governor called the draft disingenuous because it did not address the president's condition or the process that led to his withdrawal.
The report instead focused on the timing of the withdrawal and the performance of the replacement candidate on specific policy issues.
Border policy criticism The former governor agreed with parts of the report that faulted the replacement candidate's record as the administration's point person on border issues. "The border policy was terrible," the former governor said. The former governor added that voters primarily associated the replacement candidate with border matters and lacked information on other administration accomplishments.
"What did the Biden-Harris administration do for the country? That's what it's about," the former governor said. "Americans want results.
