Democratic panel to decide 2028 primary order this week

A Democratic Party panel could vote as early as this week on the order of states for the 2028 presidential primaries, according to two people familiar with the process. The Rules and Bylaws Committee is scheduled to meet in Washington on Friday. The panel has held monthly meetings and received presentations from states including Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina.

The Democratic National Committee altered its calendar-setting process after Iowa's 2020 caucus produced days of uncertainty over results. The party has since prioritized states with more diverse populations. For the 2024 cycle, South Carolina held the first contest.

State Democratic leaders have pressed for the same position in 2028, citing the state's Black and Hispanic population shares. The full Democratic National Committee is scheduled to meet in August and must approve any calendar before it becomes final.

The national committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
