Democratic Socialist Wins D.C. Mayoral Primary as Rival Concedes

The leading challenger to the Democratic front-runner in Washington, D.C., conceded Tuesday night after ranked-choice tabulation showed the 38-year-old democratic socialist with a commanding lead in the mayoral primary. The concession leaves the socialist candidate all-but-certain to become the city’s next mayor and the first new occupant of the office in twelve years.

Under the District’s new ranked-choice system, voters ranked candidates in order of preference and ballots continued to be counted through the evening. CBS News reported the front-runner held 64 percent of the vote when the concession was issued, and the Associated Press has not yet called the race. The outgoing mayor, who is not seeking a fourth term, had endorsed the conceding candidate.

At her post-election event the winner pledged to protect the city’s autonomy. “If there was any doubt, right now we lay it to rest,” she said. When asked about a possible victory by the socialist candidate, the president said he “wouldn’t like it” and suggested the federal government might assume greater control.

Congress retains budget oversight under the 1973 Home Rule Act and could repeal that authority. The winner campaigned on universal affordable childcare, expanded government-backed housing, and stronger social programs while opposing extensions of youth curfews.

The conceding candidate focused on lowering living costs and improving public safety, including efforts to return a professional football team to the city. The two candidates greeted each other and shook hands Tuesday morning before results were finalized.
