Democratic Socialists Win Primaries in New York and Colorado
Democratic socialists won several Democratic primaries in New York and Colorado ahead of the midterm elections. Republicans have labeled the candidates communists while the candidates describe their platform as democratic decision-making over economic policy.

Democratic socialists won congressional primaries in New York City and Denver in June. Zohran Mamdani won New York City's mayoral election in 2025. Katie Wilson was elected Seattle mayor the same year. The national DSA website states it wants ordinary people to have a voice in workplaces and neighborhoods and rejects authoritarian versions of socialism.
Communism, as described by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, envisions a classless, stateless society under one-party working-class rule. Democratic socialists cite existing U.S. programs such as Medicare, Social Security, and public schools as examples of government-provided services.

Chevalier won congressional primaries in New York City. Melat Kiros won a congressional primary in Denver. Janeese Lewis-George won the Democratic primary for Washington, D.C., mayor. Max Sawicky, a DSA member and economist in Virginia, said Marxist-Leninist and Maoist members exist within some chapters but have little success in elections.
DSA membership grew from 5,000 in 2017 to over 100,000 in 2026, according to the organization. A July 4 Morning Consult and Cato Institute survey found 53 percent of Gen Z respondents viewed socialism favorably compared with 27 percent of Boomers. A 2025 Gallup survey found 54 percent of Americans viewed capitalism favorably, down from 60 percent in 2021.
