Democratic Voters in Maine and Michigan Prioritize Electability in 2026 Senate Primaries

Focus groups conducted with 13 Democratic voters in Maine and Michigan showed that participants are dissatisfied with their party but remain engaged in the 2026 midterm elections. The groups, held on Tuesday, included seven participants from Maine and six from Michigan. Both states are expected to play key roles in the Senate races, where Democrats aim to net four seats to flip the majority.

The participants, consisting of 10 self-described progressives and three moderates, expressed a preference for Democratic candidates who can win against Republicans in November over those focused on opposing President Donald Trump. All 13 indicated they are likely to vote in upcoming primaries.

The focus groups were organized by Syracuse University and research firms Engagious and Sago, and observed by NBC News.
