ESPNDennis Hull died Friday night at age 81, according to his brother Garry. Nephew Bart Hull confirmed the death on social media Saturday. The Chicago Blackhawks issued a statement mourning the passing.
Owner Danny Wirtz said Hull enjoyed a distinguished career built on scoring ability and consistency. Hull played 13 of his 14 NHL seasons with the Blackhawks before finishing with the Detroit Red Wings. He appeared in five All-Star Games and was named a second-team All-Star in the 1972-73 season.
Wirtz said Hull was known around the league for his immense skill, toughness and intelligence. He added that Hull drew on his sharp wit and sense of humor to keep the locker room loose. Hull recorded 303 goals and 351 assists for 654 points in 959 regular-season NHL games.
He added 67 points in 104 playoff games. During the 1972 Summit Series, Hull had two goals and two assists in four games for Canada. He played on a line with Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert while his brother Bobby Hull was excluded because he played in the World Hockey Association.
The Blackhawks came close but never won the Stanley Cup during Hull's era with the team. Bobby Hull died at age 84 in January 2023. Wirtz said Hull's warmth and humility made everyone he met feel welcome.
The Blackhawks posted on social media that they extended their deepest condolences to the Hull family.
