Report Detects Cocaine and Production Chemicals in Colombian Tap Water
A Center for a Secure Free Society study found traces of cocaine and related chemicals in treated drinking water from several Colombian cities. The samples were collected between late 2025 and early 2026.

The study collected samples from twelve cities, including Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena, Cúcuta and seven additional municipalities.
Laboratory tests detected cocaine in tap water in Bogotá, Cartagena, Popayán and Quibdó, and in untreated water entering the system in Cali.
8 million residents. Additional substances identified at multiple sites include ammonia, diesel, acetone, methanol and gasoline. The report links the findings to Colombia’s cocaine economy and its effects on water systems, ecosystems, public health, agriculture and national security.
