DHL to Open Battery Transport Hub in Netherlands and Use Insulated Containers on Ships

DHL is building a dedicated transport hub for battery products in the Netherlands and deploying thermally insulated containers on ships to limit spontaneous combustion risks during battery shipments. DHL chief executive Tobias Meyer said large wind turbine blades create high wind loads for vessels, require stacking and specialized rigs, and remain vulnerable during transport.

Bloomberg reported that a Chinese company has developed a 26-MW wind turbine with blades measuring 153 meters, while another firm has built a 50-MW turbine that needs even longer blades.

Batteries present separate hazards. com reported that insurance costs have risen because of fire risks, and some shipping companies now refuse to carry electric vehicles and batteries. In the previous year, a fire broke out on a vessel transporting 3,000 cars, including 800 electric vehicles, forcing the ship to be abandoned in the Pacific.

An unnamed DHL executive stated that transporting transition technology will require development of specialized infrastructure because many wind and solar installations sit far from established trade routes.
