DHS to Equip All ICE Field Offices With Body Cameras Within 60 Days

The Department of Homeland Security will issue body cameras to every Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office within the next 60 days. Half the offices will receive the devices in that period while the remaining offices already have them. The department said the move fulfills an earlier pledge made after two fatal shootings last week.
In those incidents, immigration officers in Texas and Maine shot and killed two people driving vehicles; neither officer wore a body camera.
The agency resumed the stops the following day after the president directed it to continue the practice. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Thursday that verbal guidance had been issued to all field offices. She added that at least one officer must wear a body camera during any traffic stop.
Secretary Kristi Noem had pledged earlier this year to equip ICE officers with body cameras after two U.S. citizens were killed in Minnesota. The current secretary, Markwayne Mullin, is overseeing the rollout. DHS attributed prior delays to funding shortfalls linked to past government shutdowns.
Officials described the camera deployment as a top priority amid rising attacks on immigration personnel.
