A diamond-encrusted gold ring valued at $25,000-35,000 was given to the U.S. ambassador to Belgium this week for delivery to the president. The gift follows the removal of U.S. tariffs on polished diamond imports from Antwerp.
A diamond-encrusted gold ring was presented this week to the U.S. ambassador to Belgium for delivery to the president. The ring contains 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds and six rubies set in 18-karat gold. The ring features two giant letter “T” spelled in diamonds next to the Stars and Stripes and the numbers 1776 and 2026.
Two independent jewellers estimated the ring’s value between $25,000 and $35,000. The Antwerp World Diamond Centre turned to a local high-end jeweller to forge the piece.
The gift comes months after Belgium’s diamond industry won the removal of U.S. tariffs on diamond imports. In September the Antwerp World Diamond Centre said it had secured a zero percent import tariff on Antwerp’s annual export of more than $2 billion of polished diamonds to the U.S. A spokesperson for the group said the centre provided input to the European Commission during 2025 tariff negotiations but did not lobby the administration directly.
U.S. presidents have considerable discretion to accept gifts from domestic and foreign sources and may determine themselves whether a gift was meant for them personally or the nation. Foreign-government gifts are prohibited by the foreign emoluments clause without congressional assent.
The president’s 2025 financial disclosure, released this week, listed a $250,000 sculpture and $15,000 in World Cup tickets among other gifts. Four U.S. ethics experts told the Associated Press that the president has broken with decades-old custom in the White House to avoid accepting such gifts.
“May this ring serve as a lasting reminder that true partnership like the finest natural diamonds are formed under pressure, endure the test of time, and shine brightest when built on trust.”
