Diamondbacks lose 5-4 after Marte does not challenge final strike call

Major League Baseball's automated ball-strike system allows players to contest incorrect calls, but the system requires active use. Replays showed the 100 mph sinker from Cardinals pitcher Riley O'Brien was high and outside the strike zone. The Diamondbacks had both of their ABS challenges remaining at the time.

Marte said through an interpreter that he was expecting a breaking ball and was surprised by the two-seamer. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said he had not yet spoken with Marte about the decision and planned to address it Saturday.

Additional game details Marte also committed an error in the first inning that allowed two unearned runs. Lovullo said the team would review multiple mistakes from the game rather than focus on one play. Pinch runner Jorge Barrosa was picked off in the ninth inning after Nolan Arenado drew a leadoff walk. The loss ended the Diamondbacks' four-game winning streak.
