wwd.comBonhams will auction items from Diane Keaton's personal collection in New York on 8 June. The sale, titled Diane Keaton: The Architecture of an Icon, includes collages, clothing, scripts and other objects assembled by the actor over several decades.
The exhibition opened at Bonhams in West Hollywood and will move to New York later this month. One centerpiece is a large collage Keaton created by pinning photographs, menus, bingo cards and other items to a wall in her home. Anna Hicks, head of private and iconic collections at Bonhams, said the displayed section represents only a portion of an 8-by-30-foot collage Keaton kept inside her Sullivan Canyon residence.
Keaton began making collages as a child after watching her mother. She continued the practice while performing in Broadway productions such as Hair during her twenties. She described herself as a person who cuts out paper and finds old photographs rather than as a formal artist.
Specialists at Bonhams discovered additional items, including signed photographs of her Godfather co-star Al Pacino, beneath the main collage. The auction also displays objects arranged in the manner Keaton kept them at home, such as a glass box containing books on dogs and the work of visual artist Arnold Mesches.
More than 150 lots of clothing will be offered, including coats, suits and dresses by designers such as Thom Browne and Comme des Garçons. Items include one of Keaton's black bowler hats, a sequined Gucci suit, a beret worn to a 2021 Lacma gala and a 2020 Oscars suit by Ralph Lauren.
Original scripts from films including Annie Hall, The Godfather and Father of the Bride are also on view. Some scripts contain handwritten notes Keaton made about specific scenes. The sale further includes photographic prints, jewelry, footwear and works from her art collection by artists such as David Wojnarowicz, Maynard Dixon and Ed Mell.
The exhibition runs at Bonhams in New York from 29 May to 9 June.
