Din Tai Fung to Remove Shanghai Rice Cakes from U.S. Menus

Din Tai Fung will remove its Shanghai Rice Cakes from menus at restaurants across the United States by the end of the year. Employees at the chain's Midtown Manhattan location told nypost.com that the dish is being phased out gradually. The menu describes the item as chewy rice ovalettes sauteed with chicken, cabbage, spinach, soy sauce, house seasonings, and sesame oil.

" Lila Glass, who started the petition, wrote that the rice cakes provided solace during difficult periods, including after her house burned down. Other signers described the planned removal as devastating and said they visit the restaurant specifically for the dish.

Fung locations in parts of California removed the item more than a month ago, according to customer reports on Reddit. Representatives from the chain did not respond to multiple requests for comment from nypost.com.
