The Los Angeles Dodgers have hired recently retired outfielder Jason Heyward as a special assistant in their front office. Heyward reported for his first day of in-person duty at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday. The 36-year-old 16-year MLB veteran and former All-Star and Gold Glove winner will begin what he hopes will become a second career as a front-office official.

“I asked for an opportunity to learn,” Heyward said. ” His interest in front-office work grew during the final seasons of his playing career. Heyward became fascinated with the details involved in running a baseball organization, including bullpen decisions and lineup matchups.

For now his role remains open-ended. He will shadow several front-office departments, beginning by observing the vice president of scouting, and will travel to the team’s minor-league affiliates to work with young players. He acknowledged that he enters the new role with limited experience and must start from the ground up.

“Everything’s on the table,” he added of what his future might hold. ” Heyward reached out to several teams this offseason after retiring following a brief stint with the Padres. The Dodgers offered what he viewed as the strongest chance to develop the necessary skills in scouting, player evaluation, research and development, and analytics.

“I understand there’s a lot I have to learn on this side of things,” he said. “It’s great to be a player, it’s great to have that experience. The team credits him with helping establish a standard that contributed to recent success, even though he was designated for assignment late in the 2024 season.

The manager said he is excited to have Heyward back with the organization. The new role will allow the former player to gain exposure to the operational side of baseball while continuing to support the clubhouse environment.

Separately, the Philadelphia Phillies have re-added utility player Dylan Moore to their organization after designating him for assignment earlier this month. Moore has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Moore, who spent eight years in the major leagues, provides depth across the outfield and infield.

He won a Gold Glove Award as a utility player with the Seattle Mariners in 2024. In limited action with the Phillies this season, Moore recorded no hits in 12 at-bats but drew three walks, stole a base and scored three runs. He appeared at six different positions, including pitching in one game.

The Phillies also signed switch-hitter Dylan Carlson to a minor-league contract to address outfield depth, particularly in center field while Johan Rojas serves an 80-game suspension. >"I asked for an opportunity to learn.

How else this could be read

Heyward's quick hiring by the Dodgers after being cut late in 2024 could be seen as the organization opportunistically securing a respected veteran voice at low cost to help sustain its recent championship culture.
