Dog Waste Bags Found Wedged in Stones of Hadrian's Wall UNESCO Site

Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching 73 miles across northern England, has seen reports of dog waste bags wedged into its historic stones. Caretakers attribute this to visitors not carrying waste to disposal points. The wall, constructed around AD 122 under Emperor Hadrian, once stood up to six meters high and three meters deep in places.

Mark Newman, an archaeologist for the National Trust, stated that the problem has worsened steadily. He noted that littering risks accelerating the structure's decay and affecting long-term conservation efforts. Newman described the site as an iconic landscape of outstanding universal value.

Tony Gates, the outgoing chief executive of the authority, highlighted the issue as a notable problem in visitor behavior.

The wall runs from Wallsend on the River Tyne in the east to the Solway Firth in the west.

It served as a military barrier, customs point, and administrative frontier, garrisoned by thousands of Roman soldiers from across the empire. Today, it represents one of the best-preserved sections of Roman military infrastructure in Europe and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The issue extends beyond Hadrian's Wall to other National Trust sites, where Newman reported dog waste bags hung on trees.
