The vice president visited Budapest earlier this week to show support for Orban. The vice president said he was committed to helping Orban win the election.

During his visit, the vice president stated that bureaucrats in Brussels have tried to destroy Hungary's economy. He referred to the European Commission's role in drafting and enacting laws. The secretary of state visited Budapest in February and told Orban that the president is deeply committed to his success.

The Trump administration's 2025 National Security Strategy, published in late November, outlined concerns about Europe's national identities. It cited immigration policies and censorship of free speech as factors. Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz described parts of the document as unacceptable.

Several European Union leaders have criticized Orban's policies on courts, LGBTQ+ rights, and vetoing funds for Ukraine.

The EU has withheld billions of euros in funding for Hungary. Orban's government has maintained close ties with Russia following Moscow's 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have supported Orban's campaign.
