Doublet Quakes Kill 1,430 in Northern Venezuela

Two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude hit northern Venezuela three days ago, killing at least 1,430 people and leaving between 51,000 and 68,000 still missing. The first shock registered 7.2; 39 seconds later the second reached 7.5, a rare doublet sequence that released roughly three times the energy of the initial quake.

Seventeen flights carrying more than 1,600 rescue personnel have landed, and more than 14,000 members of the military and police are deployed to the affected areas. Local residents in several zones say they have seen little official support, and some have blocked heavy equipment leaving rubble sites after state workers were observed taking photographs instead of assisting.

The first 72 hours after a major quake are considered critical for locating survivors; that window has now closed, raising fears that many of the missing may no longer be reachable.

Why the Damage Was So Severe Older buildings in Caracas and coastal cities proved especially vulnerable because many predate modern seismic standards. Hospitals, the Venezuelan Red Cross headquarters, and the French Embassy were among at least eight structures reported heavily damaged.

Venezuela sits at the junction of the South American and Caribbean plates, where the Oca-Ancón, El Pilar, and Boconó faults converge; the quakes ruptured the main east-west fault segment.

The 2023 Turkey-Syria doublet earthquakes killed more than 59,000 people, the highest toll this decade. Japan’s 2011 Tohoku quake and tsunami claimed nearly 20,000 lives, while Haiti’s 2010 magnitude-7.0 event killed an estimated 100,000 to 160,000.

Scientists note that 93 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater occurred worldwide between June 19 and 26, marking an unusually active global week that also included events in Japan and California.
