The World Health Organization reported Thursday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 600 people and produced 1,759 confirmed cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15. The case fatality rate stands at 34 percent, with 285 patients recovered and 304 suspected cases still under investigation.
The outbreak has affected four provinces but remains concentrated in Ituri province.
It is driven by the Bundibugyo species of the virus, for which no approved vaccines or treatments exist. A clinical trial evaluating the monoclonal antibody MBP134 and the antiviral drug remdesivir, alone and in combination, began in the DRC on July 2. In neighboring Uganda, health authorities have recorded 20 confirmed cases, two deaths and 17 recoveries.
