Driver Crashes Into Viña del Mar Market, Killing at Least Six

An off-duty driver in a private vehicle crashed into an open-air market in Viña del Mar on Sunday, killing several people and injuring others. The navy said the accident resulted in deaths and injuries of varying severity. Local media reported at least six deaths.

The navy is cooperating with authorities to establish the circumstances. Col. Jorge Guaita, police prefect for Viña del Mar, told reporters the driver stated he does not remember anything about the incident.

The cause has not yet been determined. Witness statements indicate the vehicle was traveling in the correct direction of traffic at high speed. Guaita said the vehicle mounted the sidewalk and spun around before a bus stop halted it.

Chilean President José Antonio Kast stated the incident had plunged the entire country in mourning. Kast added that all state institutions are working to assist those affected and establish responsibilities for the event.
