Driver Juha Miettinen Dies in Multi-Car Crash at Nürburgring Qualifier Race
A 66-year-old driver died following a seven-car collision during an endurance sports car race at Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. The incident halted the qualifier event, which featured Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen in preparation for an upcoming 24-hour race. Organizers confirmed six other drivers underwent precautionary medical checks but faced no life-threatening injuries.

The collision occurred three laps into the qualifier race, prompting race control to immediately halt the event with a red flag for extensive recovery and rescue operations. Emergency services arrived immediately, extracting Miettinen from his vehicle before he died at the Medical Centre despite all attempts at resuscitation.
Six other drivers were taken to the medical center and nearby hospitals for precautionary examinations.
None of the six other drivers were in a life-threatening condition, according to ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers organizers. The race was suspended an hour later once the severity of the multi-car collision became apparent and would not resume on Saturday evening.
The race featured four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen, who was preparing to race as part of his buildup for his first 24-hour sportscar race at the Nürburgring on May 16-17.
Verstappen posted a message of condolence on Instagram following the incident. He wrote: "Shocked by what happened today. Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be.
" Verstappen also shared a similar statement on social media: "Shocked by what's happened today. " A minute's silence will be held in memory of Juha Miettinen during the grid formation for Sunday's race.
The Nordschleife layout at the Nürburgring runs nearly 13 miles through wooded German hills and has more than 150 corners.
Barriers are often close to the track at the Nordschleife layout. Formula 1 has not used the Nürburgring Nordschleife since 1976, when Niki Lauda suffered severe burns in a crash at the circuit.
