East African Legislative Assembly MP Kanini Kega said Monday that his government security detail had been withdrawn. He posted the statement on his social media platforms the same day. AllAfrica reported that the announcement followed Kega's earlier report of an alleged attempted assassination on the night of July 13 while he campaigned in Nyandarua County for the United Democratic Alliance candidate in the Ol Kalou by-election.
Kega described being pursued by armed men in unmarked vehicles after leaving a campaign meeting in Ol Kalou. According to Kega, a double-cabin pickup blocked his convoy and one occupant pointed a gun at him, forcing his driver to take evasive action.
A second vehicle attempted to cut off the escape route, but his team fled and sought refuge at a nearby home before reporting the incident at Ol Jororok Police Station.
Kega alleged that the attackers were rogue police officers. Those allegations have not been independently verified, and the National Police Service has not publicly addressed them. The statements come amid mutual accusations between the United Democratic Alliance and the Democracy for the Citizens Party during the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election campaign over intimidation and misuse of security agencies.
