Ebola Outbreak in Eastern Congo Draws $500 Million in Pledges

Global donors have pledged about $500 million to address an Ebola outbreak centered in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. African leaders and international health officials stated that the virus risks spreading beyond the affected region if containment measures are not strengthened.

The pledges come from a mix of governments, multilateral institutions, and private donors, according to statements released by health agencies. Officials said the funds will support treatment centers, contact tracing, and vaccination campaigns in the hardest-hit provinces.

Health ministers from neighboring countries met to coordinate border screening and information sharing. The same officials noted that past outbreaks in the region required sustained cross-border cooperation to prevent wider transmission.

Medical teams have expanded isolation wards and deployed additional rapid-response units to villages reporting new cases. Aid groups said supply chains for protective equipment and therapeutics remain under strain but are receiving priority shipments funded by the new pledges.
