Ebola Outbreak in Eastern Congo Grows to 139 Probable Deaths
The World Health Organization reported that the Ebola virus has been circulating for several months in Ituri province. Officials recorded 139 probable deaths and nearly 600 suspected cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15.
Le MondeThe World Health Organization stated on May 20 that the Ebola virus has been circulating for several months in Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo and is spreading. Tracing chains of transmission will be extremely difficult, the organization added.
Since the outbreak was declared by Congolese authorities on May 15, the official death toll has risen to 139 probable deaths with nearly 600 suspected cases. The figure is likely far from the true toll, as many patients have remained at home.
The region borders Uganda and South Sudan and is heavily populated. Healthcare centers are already overwhelmed, leaving numerous sources of infection outside the reach of healthcare workers. The WHO said it is unlikely the disease will spread globally but warned of a high risk that it will continue to advance in Central Africa.
Emergency measures have been deployed to contain the outbreak, yet the situation remains far from under control.
