The number of suspected Ebola cases has risen sharply since the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency on Saturday. The latest figures show more than 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths. The vast majority of cases are in a remote province in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a region that has experienced decades of conflict.

Two cases have also been reported in Uganda's capital. The World Health Organization has identified the strain as Bundibugyo virus and stated that the outbreak may have begun months before detection.

Ebola outbreaks have occurred almost exclusively in east and west Africa, with the Democratic Republic of Congo recording its 17th outbreak since 1976. The virus is believed to spread to humans through contact with infected bats or their excrement, often in caves or during mining activities.

Once a person is infected, the virus can pass to others through bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, and diarrhea.

The Bundibugyo strain identified in this outbreak has shown a case fatality rate between 30 and 50 percent in previous incidents. Unlike the Zaire strain, there are currently no licensed vaccines or specific treatments available for Bundibugyo. Medical response relies on supportive care such as rehydration, infection control, and contact tracing.

Dr. Abraar Karan of Stanford University described the situation as a perfect storm due to the remote location, limited medical infrastructure, and delayed detection. Dr. Nahid Bhadelia noted that early symptoms often resemble malaria or typhoid, making rapid diagnosis difficult.

Ebola does not spread through the air and is less contagious than measles or COVID-19. One infected person typically transmits the virus to about two others. People are not considered infectious until symptoms appear, which increases the importance of early isolation and protective equipment for caregivers.

Safe burial practices remain critical because virus levels are highest after death. Survivors must also be monitored for months or years, as the virus can persist in certain body fluids and potentially restart transmission.
