Ed Miliband Appointed Foreign Secretary in Andy Burnham Cabinet

Ed Miliband will take over from Yvette Cooper as foreign secretary in Andy Burnham's new cabinet, The Bbc reported. Miliband has served as the MP for Doncaster North since 2005 and worked for Labour MPs before the 1997 election win. He later acted as a special adviser to Gordon Brown when Brown became chancellor.

The Bbc reported that Miliband spoke outside Downing Street after his appointment by the prime minister. He told the BBC that it was the "honour of my life" to serve as foreign secretary. His brother David held the same post for Gordon Brown from 2007 to 2010.

Sir Keir announced his resignation last month. Yvette Cooper became foreign secretary in the reshuffle that followed Angela Raynor's resignation from the government. Miliband said Labour "must now redouble our efforts to deliver the bold and credible change".

Miliband added that at a time "when values of democracy, the rule of law and freedom are under threat as never before", he would "carry that spirit, their spirit, into my work as foreign secretary". He had been energy secretary in Sir Keir Starmer's cabinet and championed net zero policies. Miliband grew up in a politically active household.

His mother was human rights activist Marion Kozak and his father was Marxist sociologist Ralph Miliband. He attended a north London comprehensive school, studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University, and earned a masters in economics from the London School of Economics.

Miliband beat his brother David in the Labour leadership contest that followed the party's 2010 general election defeat.
