Egg thrown at Spurs' Victor Wembanyama misses as Knicks fans confront him outside hotel
Victor Wembanyama was jeered and nearly struck by an egg after the Spurs' Game 4 loss. The New York Police Department arrested 56 people following the Knicks' win.
ESPNKnicks fans jeered Victor Wembanyama and threw at least one egg at him as he returned to his hotel after the San Antonio Spurs' Game 4 loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals on Wednesday. A video shared online showed the egg cracking on a street sign near the hotel entrance a few blocks south of Madison Square Garden.
Wembanyama turned and confronted a person standing near the entrance before entering the building.
The Spurs did not immediately respond to a request for clarity on whether the egg struck Wembanyama. The incident followed a 29-point collapse by the Spurs, who now trail in the series after Wembanyama missed two key free throws in the final minutes.
The New York Police Department stated that 56 people were taken into custody for charges ranging from assault to disorderly conduct following the Knicks' victory.
"Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game," the police department said in a statement. An NYPD spokesperson said they had nothing on file about the egg incident.
