Egypt Eliminates Australia from World Cup in Penalty Shootout

Egypt defeated Australia in a FIFA World Cup penalty shootout, eliminating the Socceroos from the tournament. Australian coach Tony Popovic replaced starting goalkeeper Patrick Beach with Mat Ryan ahead of the shootout. Mat Ryan did not save any of Egypt's penalty kicks.

Mark Schwarzer questioned the goalkeeper change during an appearance on ABC Sport Daily. "Whenever a coach makes that decision to bring in a goalkeeper in the last couple of minutes of the game to replace the playing goalkeeper, you're kind of making a statement," he said. Schwarzer added that the move disrupts rhythm and confidence and places excessive pressure on the replacement.

Popovic also started Nestory Irankunda out of position and substituted both Irankunda and Cristian Volpato in the 74th minute while the score remained level. The changes meant Irankunda, Volpato, and Mohamed Touré never appeared together as a trio during Australia's campaign. Schwarzer said Australia held a genuine opportunity to advance further but did not seize it.

He called for a more attack-minded approach in future tournaments, arguing that the team possesses the technical quality to play more adventurously while remaining difficult to break down.
