thesouthafrican.comA resident of Dahab on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has outlined practical steps for managing daily life when temperatures reach 40C. The advice is drawn from two summers in the region plus earlier experience in Jordan, Mexico, and Australia.
Days begin early because physical activity is scheduled for sunrise. Midday movement slows and regular breaks or short rests are taken to limit fatigue. Evening social plans start and finish later than sunset. Movements are kept deliberate and relaxed. Ocean swims are added between tasks to maintain energy levels.
Water intake is routine. Room-temperature fluids are preferred over iced drinks because the body expends less energy adjusting temperature. Rehydration sachets from pharmacies are mixed into water bottles when dehydration is felt. Frozen electrolyte cubes and frozen grapes or berries are used as cooling snacks. These items are prepared in advance for immediate use on hot days.
Light-colored linen garments are chosen to reduce sweat and aid temperature regulation. A shawl or sarong is carried for sun and sand protection. A sun hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses are carried daily, along with a small hand fan. An ayurvedic oil is applied to the temples before sleep to ease nighttime discomfort.
Air conditioning is used sparingly because it removes moisture; an oil diffuser is run to restore humidity. Where air conditioning is unavailable, a damp towel hung in a doorway is used to create airflow. The article was first published in June 2025 and later revised.
