Egyptian Court to Rule on Appeal of Writer Ahmed Douma's One-Year Sentence

The Committee to Protect Journalists and partner organizations on 9 July 2026 issued a joint statement urging Egyptian authorities to release political writer Ahmed Douma immediately and unconditionally. AllAfrica reported that the groups also called for an end to all forms of judicial harassment against him and the prompt lifting of a travel ban still in effect.
Douma was arrested on 6 April 2026 at the Supreme State Security Prosecution headquarters after a six-hour interrogation.
He remained in pretrial detention for nearly two months. On 3 June 2026 he received a one-year prison sentence on charges of publishing false news and rumors that would disturb public order. The charges stemmed from social-media posts and an article Douma wrote for the London-based news website The New Arab.
The Fifth Settlement Misdemeanor Court is scheduled to issue its judgment on his appeal on 16 July 2026. AllAfrica reported that Egypt held 18 journalists in prison as of 9 July 2026.
