Eight People Shot in Coney Island on July 4, Seven in Stable Condition

Eight people, including four children, were shot in Brooklyn's Coney Island neighborhood on July 4 while watching fireworks. The shooting occurred just after 10:30 p.m. on West 31st Street outside the Seapark Apartments near the boardwalk.

Police responded to reports of multiple gunshot victims and found eight people wounded at the scene. The victims range in age from 6 to 37. They include a 6-year-old boy shot in the stomach, a 7-year-old boy shot in both legs, a 12-year-old boy shot in the leg, and a 14-year-old boy shot in the thigh.

Adult victims include a 21-year-old woman shot in the chest, a 25-year-old woman, a 33-year-old man, and a 37-year-old man. All eight victims were transported to nearby hospitals. Seven remain in stable condition while the 21-year-old woman is listed in critical condition.

Police recovered a firearm at the scene, including a gun found inside a book bag under nearby trees. No arrests have been made and the incident remains under investigation. Nsowaa Stewart, a Coney Island resident, described the scene.

“If you go by there, you see bikes, you see children’s toys, it’s horrible to walk by there,” she said.
