Events typically occur every two to seven years, last nine to 12 months and usually peak between November and February. On Thursday the WMO reported that global ocean temperatures reached a new high in June. The previous El Niño contributed to 2023 becoming the second-hottest year on record, while 2024 set the all-time record at about 1.55 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average.
