Eli Lilly reported Thursday that its next-generation obesity drug retatrutide produced weight loss approaching levels seen with bariatric surgery in a Phase 3 trial. The study enrolled obese and overweight adults without diabetes. 3 percent of their body weight.

Eleven percent of patients on the highest dose stopped treatment because of adverse events. When all participants were included in the analysis, average weight loss was 25 percent. Discontinuation rates due to side effects in earlier trials of approved drugs Wegovy and Zepbound reached up to 7 percent.

The company has not yet released full safety data or announced next regulatory steps for retatrutide.
