Empire Interactive Halts 3DO Revival After Rights Holder Declines to Sell

Empire Interactive has ended work on reviving the 3DO console and remastering its games, the company stated on or before July 2. The move came days after the firm announced the project last week. Empire Interactive attributed the decision to the emergence of multiple parties claiming ownership rights over the games and console.

It added that it did not want to risk prolonged legal disputes whose costs would likely exceed any potential revenue. Işık Şekercigil owns Empire Interactive and holds rights to the 3DO company name. Canadian firm Throwback Entertainment controls the intellectual property rights to the 3DO console hardware and games, Time Extension reported.

Throwback Entertainment told Time Extension it had no plans to sell those rights. Engadget reported the sequence of announcements and the ownership details.
