An employment tribunal unanimously dismissed all race and religion discrimination claims filed by Zara Saiyed against Heathrow Airport Ltd. The dispute centered on a Palestinian flag badge worn on her work lanyard in November 2023. GB News reported the outcome after review of extensive testimony and documents.
news.sky.comAn employment tribunal rejected every claim of race and religion discrimination filed by Zara Saiyed, a Muslim security officer at Heathrow Airport, GB News reported. The unanimous decision followed close to two weeks of testimony and review of more than 1,600 pages of documentation.
The dispute began in November 2023 when a fellow employee challenged Saiyed about the Palestinian flag badge on her staff lanyard.
The next day she submitted a grievance stating that the emblem represented a vital expression of her personal identity and beliefs. In the complaint she wrote that demanding removal of the badge was tantamount to finding her hijab offensive. Saiyed later alleged in another grievance that Heathrow was complicit in the killing of Palestinian babies.
She also objected to the airport's decision to withhold publication of a Ramadan video featuring her and raised further complaints about internal meetings and communications with supervisors. Heathrow management conducted repeated investigations and met with Saiyed on multiple occasions in attempts to resolve the issues.
The tribunal determined that the airport had made substantial efforts to address her concerns.
The panel concluded that none of Saiyed's allegations were substantiated by the evidence. The events occurred weeks after the October 2023 Hamas-led attacks that resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken.
