Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran have prompted countries to adjust energy security plans, according to participants at the 2026 Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum. Romania has installed more than seven gigawatts of renewables and approved a 462-megawatt NuScale reactor at the former Doicești coal plant.
AECOM said survivability, not efficiency, must guide new energy systems after Russian strikes on Ukrainian grids. George-Sergiu Niculescu of Romania's energy regulator ANRE stated Romania has supplied power to Moldova for four winters and reversed natural gas flows westward.
