Engineering Analyst Lands Google Role 90 Days After AWS Layoff

Charles Broomfield was laid off from Amazon Web Services in late January 2026 and accepted an engineering analyst role at Google in April. Broomfield graduated from Knox College and worked as a computer science tutor before joining a government research company and then moving to AWS in the summer of 2025.

Broomfield began applying for new positions on January 24, several days before receiving formal layoff notice. He maintained a structured daily routine that included outreach in the morning, exercise or cooking in the afternoon, and three to four hours of application tailoring in the evening. He said he avoided applying to every available posting and focused only on roles that interested him.

Broomfield applied to 42 positions after the layoff, 26 of which came with referrals. He interviewed for six of those roles. A former colleague encouraged him to apply to Google. He was rejected from two positions but received a recruiter response for a third role, passed a technical screen, completed three interviews, and received an offer within weeks.

He said he started outreach with friends and college contacts before expanding to other acquaintances.

Broomfield said savings accumulated since college provided flexibility and reduced stress during the transition. He advised others to begin building professional networks before needing them.
