Trevoh Chalobah was added to England's squad as a replacement for Tino Livramento, who was ruled out with a calf injury. GB News reported that the 26-year-old Chelsea defender received the call while on holiday in New York and did not see Thomas Tuchel's text message for two hours. Chalobah had already traveled to watch the Monaco Grand Prix and planned further trips to Cannes and Los Angeles.
Former England full-back Danny Mills told GB News he was "a little bit surprised" at the selection. Mills said a squad of 26 should have included a specialist full-back and named Luke Shaw as an ample replacement. He also said there is "obviously an issue" between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tuchel, while noting Lewis Hall and Harry Maguire as other options.
Tuchel is expected to make changes to the lineup for England's final group-stage match against Panama, which kicks off at 10pm on Saturday.
